Contribution (2nd part)

Soong Guan Theng 18303

As the leader, I am responsibible to arrange the tasks to everyone of this group. Also I will keep track of all the task I had given. Personally, I contributed 1 technology in the literature review which turns out to be the selected technology. Also I am the person doing the selected technology part and also the sustainability part. I also did the stimulation of the technology in the Aspen Hysys and the mass balance of the reaction. I also did the transfer function of the control element in the technology. Also I completed 2 chapters of KRD in the Prezi. I am also the webmaster of this website who updates and edits the website layout.

Proceeding into this second project, my very first contribution is to use the knowledge of reactor sizing, and to apply it into this project in order to find the reactor sizing of a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Other than that, I, along with a few other teammates have completed the mind map for the following courses: CPDIC, KRD and PSLP on Prezi.

For the initial stage of this second project, I contributed to the literature review of this project. It involves researching for various technologies related to converting wastes, specifically organic wastes, into useful products. For the later stage of this project, I have created the hazard and operability study (HAZOP) for the process of our system, which is transesterification of animal oil into biodiesel. It is a structured and systematic examination of our transesterification process in order to identify and evaluate problems that may represent risks to personnel or equipment, or prevent efficient operation.

Once again I would like to take this opportunity to convey my joy of working with my teammates.

Basically my task for this time are as following

  • Provide or propose the best alternative

  • Create prezi for the summary of CPDIC  subject.

For second project, all of us were assign by our group leader, David Soong to find the technology for vegetables waste treatment into useful product as we know that Tesco produce more waste on vegetables compare to fish, chicken, bread and etc. After discuss among each of us had agreed with biodiesel and proceed the job according to the timeline. Me myself contribute to my group member by doing the Mechanical Drawing of the reactor and drawing the P&ID for the process. I also leant with Soong on how to use the Hysys. I believe my group leader had distributed the task equally to each group member according to each other capability as there are many events in the last weeks.

Reflection of subjects (2nd part)

Soong Guan Theng 18303

KRD- Having learnt the basic theory part of the kinetic reactor, the second part of the subject emphasizes on the experimental and more realistic situation of a reactor. In chapter 4, I learned how to get the reaction order from the data. I learned about maximizing the selectivity of desired product in multiple reaction: parallel & series reactions in chapter 6. I learned about the adiabatic reactor which was assumed to be isothermal in the previos chapter. I also learned about the reversible reactions and equilibrium constant in chapter 8. Dr Tazli has a interative and interesting teaching style, helping student to understand the subject by the means of multimedia. I like this kind of teaching style. However, project given is not reasonable with the huge load of works but low rewards in marks. In addition, this project was given after the completion of another project that contains the same load of works, not to say that we are having other subjects in the same time. I hope Mr Tazli will be more concerned about this matter in the future. Students are demotivated, exhausted and having depression. No pain, no gain. I am still very grateful to have Mr Tazli as my lecturer. I learn a lot in these 2 project.

CPDIC- The second part of this subject emphasize more on getting a stable, fast response and accurate signal. I learn about the proportional, integral and deriavative controller. I learn how to construct a block diagram of controller. I learn about the concept of stability. In the frequency response chapter, I learn the concept of a Bode diagram, Gain margin and phase margin. Also, in the last chapter I learn about the instrumentation of the control element. Mrs Haslinda's teaching style is straight forward. This helps the students to understand the subject faster.

PSLP- Second part of this subject starts with the fire and explosion chapter. Next I learned about the hazard identification for my second krd project. Dr. Zul continued his teaching style and I enjoyed the class.

KRD – I have noticed that the chapters that we've learnt in this course is coherent to the title of the course, which is kinetics and reactor design. This subject is really beneficial for us in the future for industrial purposes.

CPDIC – This course has definitely became more interesting as it approached towards the end of the chapters. Previously, I did not really have a good grasp on what this course would benefit us in the future. However said, I believe that due to this project as well as our lecturer that I've finally gotten a good understanding of the application of the knowledge that we've learnt to industries in the future.

PSLP – This course has personally improved my consciousness on the importance of hazards and how we should take extra precautions toward these hazards, as well as to learn an approach to handle it well during emergencies.

KRDThis course is the most unique course I have ever had in my whole university life. Even though the name of this course is “Kinetics Reactor Design”, I learnt various software and soft skills through this course. Thanks to Mr. Tazli we are able to experience this unique interactive learning method. It is challenging yet very fulfilling after we manage to complete all the projects given. The take home test is another new thing to me. Creating questions and answer scheme of high order thinking is not an easy task; in fact it is extremely hard. Anyways, despite all these challenges, we will ultimately learn something out of these.

CPDICAt first I thought I will hate this CPDIC course as I initially thought it was hard. However as I go through this semester, I am slowly picking it up and actually grew to like this subject. I am now able to do mathematical modelling of chemical processes. I also learn about all sorts of controller as well as control and process Instrumentation. I learnt many new concepts such as frequency response, gain and phase margins. I hope to apply this in the near future.

PSLPAfter this semester of Process Safety and Loss Prevention course, I am now more aware and conscious of HSE of a process. I am able to describe hazards with the standards and regulatory requirement as well as identify potential hazards using HAZOP technique. I am also able to evaluate hazards using suitable source of toxic release, fire, explosion and dispersion models as well as the impact of hazards to people and structure using effect models. Besides, I am able to assess risk due to hazards using Fault Tree and Event Tree analysis. Finally, I am able to propose suitable mitigation techniques to eliminate or reduce hazards. This course has prepared me well when I face the industrial world.

As far as CPDIC is concern,  this subject is the hardest subject I have ever encountered. This is because there are many derivation of equation for different control process situation. This subject requires time and patience to grasp the concept. However, I am grateful to have Dr Abbas as my lecturer because he is very approachable and helps the students to understand his lecture.

Dr Haslinda took over the responsibilty of delivering lectures for the 2nd term of the semester. Somehow, I would say that now CPDIC is starting to make sense to me. It all about making system efficient and make it stable. Sound simply but it is not that simple. The assignments she provided consists of real life application question which help me to see how different type of stability problem may occur in the plant and how to tackle it. The simulation lab also help me to understand Mathlab better and  the methods of running simulation with it. I think it be very useful for me during my future working time.

Thank you Dr Abbas and Dr Haslina

KRD - For the second half of the semester until now of learning Kinetic Reactor Design, I can understand how the subject really interrelated among the chapters as what Dr. Tazli teach us. Apart from the course it self, the new style of teaching promoted by Dr. Tazli is very convenient for me which we can actually listen to his lecture on the YouTube while doing other works because me as student apparently spent more time on the internet, so this is a good option for me to study. Maybe some modification can be made in term of method since this is a first try, hundreds of feedback should be taken for future improvement. For example, ask the class representative to discuss among the student first about how they feel regarding the method used. Hence, a proper feedback can be gain.

CPDIC – I realized on the second part of this subject, there are more theoretical parts in control compare to first part which is more to calculation and derivation. It is interesting to understand the theory behind first before learning the calculation part. By using this way, students can have a better understanding in what they are learning. Dr. Haslinda style of teaching is really comfortable as she will ask a few students to do in front of board and discuss with the whole class. We can really understand as she will repeat the last activities in the next class with different question.

PSLP – For the second part, Dr. Dzulkarnain remain teaching us with his styles of teaching by giving us assignment in class after finish his explanation from the slide. He will guide all of us during doing the assignment. Plus, his class is very flexible which he we used wisely his ease us to understand better and the class can be finish early and we can have more time on the exercise.

Reflection of project (2nd part)

Soong Guan Theng 18303

Firstly, I was very demotivated and depressed with the heavy woks of the second project after the completion of the first project. I can rarely sleep well after the raya break as there are too many jobs to be done not to say we have to handle the other subjects. That is totally unhealthy. However, hard work does pay. I learned a lot throughout this project such as stress management, human resources management, and also time management. Also my skill in Aspen Hysys sharpens after this project which is very helpful to my engineer career. Learning is the supportive element for me to complete this project.

Lupete Kaur Bhullar 20021

Overall-In my own conceit, this project has definitely portrait an effective learning tool through the designing of a reactor since it offers a thought-provoking understanding of selected topics, and I feel that throughout the process of completing this project that I have learnt a lot in expertizing these topics as well as in researching outside the field of study. This project comprises of tasks which include the usage of Prezi, developing a P&ID, and HAZOP; all of which were challenging to me at first. But, with time, I believe that these challenges have moulded and constructed me in such a way that is beneficial for my future self.

Chong Hoong Liang 17968

I find this second project very interesting. However, this project is a very challenging one as it involves real life applications. Once again Mr Tazli has forced us out of our comfort zone and made us push our limits. Instead of just learning the fundamentals and theories, we are to apply what we have learned in all three subjects (KRD, CPDIC and PSLP) in this project. Through this project, I am now exposed to the various alternative ways of converting waste into wealth. I find this project very beneficial to preparing us for the industrial world.

Kinosraj A/L Kumaran 15352

During this 2nd project, I feel that this project help me to grasp the understanding of all the knowledge I have learnt so far during this semester. The alternatives we have selected for this project is a novel approach to solve the waste management issue. As we were proceeding with project, I saw how all three subject (KRD, PSLP & CPDIC) are interconnected to each other. It given me a glimpse of what real working situation will look like whereby a chemical engineer will be given a problem to solve and how the knowledge we have consumed so far during the degree studies will help us to solve the problem.

Nor Aman Bin Nor Rizan 18243

This second project is really different with the first project as this is way more to Engineering projects compare to first project. First project is way more fun to me as it involve more on the creativity parts and I should say we interact more among the group member compare to second project. Second project is more academically and more professional compare to first project. For me personally think that first project is good as we really need to be creative in all the way to produce a superb board game and it is fun for me as it is early in the semester where we are not busy as in this last week of semester. Second project is suites to be done in the second half of the semester where we actually understand better about the subjects and how it interrelated. Plus, we are quite busy with other non-academic activities a part from study which are good in shaping our future. Thanks to Dr. Tazli for give us the chances to try this new method, I really appreciate your efforts even I know there more actually a part from what we know.
